Salmon Scores Five; Redmen Beat Iron Mountain
IRON MOUNTAIN---Trevor Salmon scored all five goals as the Marquette Redmen topped the Iron Mountain Mountaineers, 5-3, in boys soccer on Thursday. “It was definitely a tuff contest playing the on their home field," Marquette Coach Dan Menze said. Marquette fell behind, 1-0, before Salmon scored the equalizer, with Connor Johnson drawing the assist. That made it a 1-1 game at halftime. The Mountaineers scored two goals to start the second half, putting the Redmen in a 3-1 hole entering the game's final 20 minutes. "Their goalie was playing near unbeatable until the last 15 minutes where we, mainly Trevor Salmon, finally cracked the code and was able to score four unanswered goala," Menze said. Indeed, it was Salmon who rallied the Redmen. He scored on a penalty kick to cut it to 3-2, then he tied the game off a feed from ophomore Nick Lindberg. Salmon then put Marquette in front with his fourth goal, with Max Dawson drawing the assist. And Salmon closed the scoring with an insurance goal, with sophomore Axel Vermaat getting the helper. "I'm really proud of the resilience of this young group of kids," Menze said. "Couldn't ask for a better group of kids to coach.” Marquette improves to 2-3 on season and are idle until next week when they travel to Petoskey and Traverse City. ---Dan Salmon photo |
