ONE UP, ONE DOWN: Wildcat Soccer Wins Opener
MARQUETTE---Northern Michigan University Men's Soccer scored a goal in each half as they fought through an intense match to take a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Indiana in the team's season opener.
The Wildcats took the lead with a penalty shot goal in the 23rd minute. Senior Callum Olpin (Norwich, England) was brought down while attacking the goal inside the box.
On the ensuing penalty shot, Olpin placed it into the bottom left corner to give NMU a 1-0 lead. It was Olpin's sixth career goal for the Wildcats.
The Screaming Eagles tied the score at 1-1 in the 62nd minute. NMU didn't waste much time as senior Eric Suess (Ludwigsburg, Germany) scored his third career goal, and first since his freshman season in the 68th minute.
On a pass from Sveinn Karlsson (Akureyri, Iceland), Suess got into the air and headed the ball past the USI goalkeeper to score the game-winning goal.
The Wildcats outshot the Screaming Eagles 9-8 on the night. NMU goalkeeper Patrick Restum (Okemos, Mich.) came away with three saves on the day.
The Wildcats start the year 1-0 while USI, an NCAA tournament team last season, falls to 0-1. NMU returns to action Sunday for their first road test of the year by visiting Quincy University for a 1 p.m. start.
