SOCCER SWEEP: Redmen Knock Off Trojans, 5-2
TRAVERSE CITY---The Marquette Redmen boys varsity soccer team finished a sweep of downstate teams this weekend by beating Traverse City Centra, 5-2, on Saturday after beating Petoskey on Friday night, 4-3.
On Saturday, senior captain Trevor Salmon had a hat trick to lead the way. Salmon started the scoring with a header goal, assisted by freshman Max Dawson. Dawson then returned the favor by scoring off a Salmon pass to make it 2-0. After TCC cut the lead to one, Salmon put in a Mack Vezina corner kick with seven seconds remaining in the first half to make it a 3-1 game at halftime.
In the second half, another Dawson goal (assisted by Salmon, of course) made it 4-1, before TCC scored with 12 minutes remaining.
The Redmen had the last laugh, though, as Salmon completed his hat trick on the ensuing kickoff. Sophomore Harrison Anthos faced six shots in net for Marquette and stopped four of them for the victory.
“It was a really great team effort both days, great forward play, makes it easy when everyone is giving it their all," MarquetteHead Coach Dan Menze said.
