RED WAVE: Detroit Stops St. Louis In Calumet, 4-1
CALUMET---The Detroit Red Wings exploded for two goals in each of the first two periods and cruised past the St. Louis Blues, 4-1, in the Kraft USA Hockeyville NHL exhbition game Thursday night at the Calumet Colosseum. Anthony Mantha got the Red Wings going when he scored on a one-timer at the 15:28 mark of the first period, with Dennis Cholowski drawing the lone assist. The Blues got even just 43 seconds into the second period when Ryan O'Reilly put one home, with David Perron and Samuel Blais drawing the assists, The Blues actually outshot the Wings, 14-11, in that second period, but goaltender Calvin Pickard staying strong in between the pipes. Pickard also had a strong third period as well, and finished with 36 saves on 37 shots. The Calumet Colosseum won the fan voting contest last spring, which earned the community the chance to host this game in a 700-seat arena that was built in 1913. The organizing committee won $150,000 to make massive upgrades to the facility. It was a who's-who of hockey, with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman taking part in the pre-game ceremonies and Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman in the stands.
