This story was written by NMU Sports Information

MARQUETTE--
-Northern Michigan University Volleyball faced Lake Superior State University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup that also served as the team's home opener, but the Wildcats fell to the Lakers 3-1.

In the first set, the teams stayed close, seeing a tied 22-22 score.  However, LSSU scored two points before sophomore Lizzy Stark (Minneapolis, Minn.) got the kill from freshman Lauren Van Remortel (Carmel, Ind.). Lake State answered with a kill to take the first set 25-23.

The second set saw NMU jump out to a 12-8 advantage but the Lakers managed to rally back until the teams were tied at 16-16. Unfortunately, LSSU was able to close out the set on a run to win the second set 25-20.

The Wildcats bounced back and captured the third set. With the score tied 22-22, Van Remortel got the assist on Stark's kill. Stark then served an ace to make it 24-22. On the next point, sophomore Hailey Wickstrom (Calumet, Mich.) and freshman Abigail Durecki (South Lyon, Mich.) teamed for the set-winning block to give the Wildcats a 25-22 set three win.

The fourth set went LSSU's way, 25-20, to give the guests the 3-1 match victory.
Stark led the team with 16 kills. Durecki added 15 kills and only suffered one hitting error. Wickstrom chipped in with eight kills while senior Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wis.) tallied seven.

Sophomore Alli Yacko (Oak Lawn, Mich.) notched two service aces. Stark and Van Remortel finished with one each. Van Remortel finished the night with 41 assists as well.

Yacko was the team leader with 11 digs while sophomore Lauren Caprini (St. Charles, Ill.) contributed nine. Van Remortel had seven.

Wickstrom aided the effort with three total blocks. Kuehn and sophomore Alyssa Milski (Oregon, Wis.) both had two.

The Wildcats fall to 5-7 on the season and 2-2 in the GLIAC while LSSU improves to 4-7 this year and 1-2 in the GLIAC. NMU returns to action Saturday as they host Saginaw Valley State University for another GLIAC tilt in Vandament Arena.
