NMU Sports Hall Of Famer Ted Rose Dies At Age 72
This story was written by NMU Sports Information Rose was a four-time letter-winner for the Wildcats from the 1966-67 season to the 1969-70 season who made a large impact on the Men's Basketball program at NMU. He was named an Associated Press All American and the team Most Valuable Player for three seasons, and was also the team captain his senior year of 1969-70. Inducted into the NMU Sports of Hall of Fame in 1984, Rose holds the school's single game scoring mark, scoring 54 points against Central Michigan University in the 1968-69 season, and achieved over 40 points in a game on two other occasions. Against rival Michigan Technological University during the 1968-69 season, he finished the game perfect, scoring 22 points on 9-9 shooting from the field and was also 4-4 from the free throw line, recording one of just two times a player reached 20 points on a perfect shooting night in program history. Upon completion of his NMU career, Rose was selected in the 1970 NBA draft, selected by the Baltimore Bullets (now known as the Washington Wizards). Rose is one of just two players in the history of Men's Basketball at NMU to have his jersey retired in the Berry Events Center. "Ted was an all-time great Wildcat who played for two legendary Northern Michigan coaches," said Northern Michigan director of athletics Forrest Karr. "In recent years, Ted continued his support for NMU student-athletes. He spent meaningful time with the men's basketball team in Louisville last December and his legacy will continue to have a lasting positive impact on the program. Our sympathy goes out to Ted's family and friends during this time of loss." A memorial service for Ted Rose will take place on Saturday, October 19, at Canaan Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky. |
