SNOW BOWL: Northern Soccer Loses In Quarters

This story was written by NMU Sports Information

MARQUETTE---
Northern Michigan University Men's Soccer scored three goals as they battled through the snow and cold at Northwood University in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals but fell to the Timberwolves 5-3.

Northwood scored two goals early in the match but the Wildcats got on the board in the 27th minute. Off a corner kick, freshman Ryan Palmbaum (Rocklin, Calif.) found senior Nick Metcalfe (Royal Oak, Mich.) for his first points of the season.

The Timberwolves were able to add another goal before the half to lead 3-1 at the break.

Shortly after an NU foul, Metcalfe tallied his second goal of the season with his second goal of the game in the 71st minute.

Senior Callum Olpin (Norwich, England) recorded the assist on the play.

The hosts scored another goal to go up 4-2, but senior Luca Lippert (Langen, Germany) narrowed the gap with his sixth goal of the season.

The Wildcats played the ball into Northwood territory. The Timberwolves attempted to clear the ball out but struggled due to the snow. Lippert took advantage and got past the NU goalkeeper before placing the ball into the goal, making it 4-3.

With just over a minute to play, NMU attempted a corner and brought the defense up in hopes to send the game into extra time with the tying goal. However, the Timberwolves were able to clear the ball and get through the snow faster than the Wildcats to take advantage of an open net and score one more goal, making it a 5-3 final.

Palmbaum led the team with nine shots. Metcalfe and Lippert both notched three shots. Junior Keegan Goetz (Gowen, Mich.) added two shots as NMU recorded 21 shots in the match.

Sophomore Patrick Restum (Okemos, Mich.) finished with five saves.

The Wildcats conclude the 2019 season with the most wins in program history, eight, and the most wins in conference play with seven. Making their third straight GLIAC Tournament, the team finishes the year 8-11 overall and 7-7 in the GLIAC.
