Eskymos, Braves Struggle at Volleyball Tourneys
 The Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves spent their Saturday at multi-team volleyball tournaments. Both Delta County teams had mixed results, as the Braves lost four of five matches in Clintonville, Wis., and the Eskymos went 1-2-1 in pool play at a tournament in Marquette. GLADSTONE BRAVES IN WISCONSIN---The Braves began their day with a match against Marion, Wis., and lost, 2-1. The scores were 11-25, 25-12, 7-15. "We literally jumped off the bus and onto the court," Gladstone Coach Liz Gendron said. "Needless so say we started off rusty. They tipped the ball so many times, and we just weren't getting it into our brains to cover." Next, the Braves lost to Abbottsford, Wis., 2-0 (13-25, 14-25). "We gave them 36 points in the match on service and attacking errors," Gendron said. Gladstone's third match was a 2-0 loss to the host Clintonville team. "We just beat up on ourselves again," Gendron said. "There were 25 points given away on unforced errors. " The fourth match was against Valdors, Wis. The Braves lost that one as well, 2-0, by scores of 19-25 and 22-25. "There were many missed opportunities," she said. The 0-4 record in pool play put the Braves into the seventh place match and the girls salvaged one victory, 2-0, by scores of 25-22, 25-20. "Finally, in the end, we played as a team with smart decisions and strong serving," Gendron said. "This team is a better team than they showed today. They better bring it next week for our two conference matches." The Braves are now 3-12-1 in matches this season. Gladstone travels to Menominee on Tuesday, and then hosts Stephenson Thursday. ESCANABA ESKYMOS IN MARQUETTE---The Eskymos competed in the Articatz Tournament at Marquette's Bothwell Middle School on Saturday. The Eskymos opened pool play with a 2-0 loss to Marquette by scores of 16-25 and 19-25. The girls then evened their tournament record with a 2-0 win over Carney-Nadeau (25-16, 25-20). Escanaba then tied Chassell, 1-1, winning the first game 25-19 but losing the second game, 22-25. The Eskymos needed a win over Houghton to advance out of pool play, but lost both games, 14-25 and 10-25. The Eskymos are now 5-13-2 on the season. Of those 20 matches, only one has been at home. Now the girls will be at home for most of the rest of the season, with only two more matches on the road before districts begin. Escanaba will host Marquette Thursday night. |
