NMU To Organize Next Fall's Marquette Marathon

MARQUETTE---
The Marquette Marathon Race Committee and the Northern Michigan University announced that the NMU Department of Athletics will assume responsibility for administration of the Marquette Marathon starting in 2020.

The 2020 event takes place Friday and Saturday, Sept. 4-5.

"We would like to thank the many volunteers, participants, spectators and sponsors who have helped build the Marquette Marathon over the past 10 years," said Jorgen Chapin, 2019 race director. "We believe this transition will help the event continue to grow as a showcase for Marquette County and the sport of running."

According to Chapin and Cris Osier, 2016-18 race director, the event has grown from 200 entrants to more than 1,100 with representatives from nearly every state traveling to Marquette to participate.

The pair said the event has grown beyond what the race committee envisioned, and that the NMU Department of Athletics was approached about taking over administration because it has athletic management staff and other resources that could help the event continue to grow as an elite competition.

"In 2010, the Marquette Marathon committee formed out of love for the sport of distance running," said Osier. "Running marathons and half marathons was something we traveled to do. We wanted to organize a race here in Marquette County so others could experience the beauty of where we run every day. We would like to thank each volunteer who has helped us along the way and we look forward to seeing the NMU Department of Athletics continue to provide an awesome race experience."

Forrest Karr, NMU director of athletics, said planning is already in progress for the 2020 races, including Friday's kids' fun run, and Saturday's marathon, half marathon and 5K.

"The Marquette Marathon is exceptionally well-organized and our staff enjoyed going through the planning process and learning from the race committee over the past year," said Karr. "We look forward to working alongside U.P. businesses and the local running community to make sure it remains a high-quality event."

Race registration opens on Jan. 1.
