Norse Roll Past Cavaliers To Win Tournament Title
ESCANABA---The Bay College Norse men's basketball team had five players score in double figures and the Norse rolled past Western Tech (Wis.), 84-66, to win the Quality Inn & Suites Tournament Saturday night in Escanaba. The Norse picked up a pair of wins on the weekend to improve to 10-6 on the season, heading into an important game Wednesday night in Minnesota against Dakota County Technical College. That game is one of four Region XIII games that will determine the seeding for the post-season. Bay got contributions from all ten of their eligible players, including Ishpeming’s Dondre Yohe, who had a triple to make it a 21-9 Norse lead. Yohe had seven points in the first half and gave his team 21 strong minutes as center Christian Alexander sat for a time with two personal fouls. Khalid Fleming drained six of eight free throws in the first half as Bay took a 49-32 lead at the break. Fleming ended up making 11 of his 15 foul shot attempts. Dobessi’s electrifying dunk was followed moments later by a triple and two driving lay-ups, and he scored eleven points in the first half. Alexander, when he was on the floor, was tough for the Cavaliers to contain, as he scored six points in the first half in the first half and nine more in the second half. Alexander had 15 rebounds to go along with his 15 points.
Dobessi ended up with 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Fleming had five steals on defense to go along with his eleven points, all of which happened at the free throw line.
Negaunee graduate Luke Mattson turned in his usual blue-collar game inside the paint, battling his way to seven points and nine rebounds. Seven of those rebounds were on the offensive end of the court. Robinette had 13 points, seven rebounds, and had three assists. Matt Wagner was declared the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Marinette High School graduate nailed a three-pointer for the first points of the game, and on the play, landed wrong on his ankle and hit the floor in pain. He later returned with a taped-up ankle and hit two more triples, finishing with eleven points. Mahlik Lindsey led Western Tech (5-7) with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Derek Davis added nine points. The Cavaliers made just six of 30 three-point attempts and were outrebounded 49-35. In the third place game, Gogebic Community College beat Sault College (Ontario), 87-62. Mitch Borseth led the Samsons (3-11) with 31 points and six rebounds. Raquentez Woodley had 21 points and Emmanuel Ige added 20 points and five assists. The Samsons made 32 of their 66 field goal attempts. Sault College (1-12) got 17 points from Jaylyne Miller-Tucker and 15 points from Kevon Clarke. Dobessi and Fleming joined Wagner on the All-Tournament Team for the Norse.
