24 Upper Peninsula HS Wrestlers Qualify For States

Twenty-four Upper Peninsula high school wrestlers qualified for the MHSAA State Finals at Detroit’s Ford Field on Saturday by placing in the top four at their individual regional tournaments in Gaylord, Boyne City, and Charlevoix.

Seven of them won regional championships.

In Division Three at Boyne City, Gladstone 103-pounder Michael Brazeau won the championship over Joe Armstrong of Grayling High School on a 18-0 tech fall score.

The other six U.P. regional champions came at the regional tournament in Charlevoix.

At 145 pounds, Bark River-Harris’s Drew Allgeyer won the championship over Jerry
Brandel of Hart High School on a 5-0 decision.

At 112 pounds, Iron Mountain’s Shawn McGuire beat Trayce Tate of Hart High School in the final on a 9-1 major decision.

Ishpeming’s Jaeger Wilson won the regional championship at 119 pounds, beating Matthew Trebiber of Leroy-Pine River on an 8-5 decision.

Iron Mountain’s Parker Stroud won the 125-pound regional title again, beating Zach Oullette of Oscoda High School, 7-4, in the final.

At 103 pounds, Bradley Hall of Rudyard won the championship by beating Tyler DeMoy of Mio-Au Sable on a pin at the 1:11 mark.

And at 215 pounds, Ishpeming’s Alec Martin won the championship over Oscoda’s  Christian Ward on a 5-1 decision.

The other Yoopers who will be heading to the state finals include two Escanaba Eskymos.

Hunter Larson finished second at 140 pounds after losing a tough Division Two title match to Nate Young of Holly High School on a 4-1 decision. Escanaba 125-pounder Collin Arnt also qualified for states by finishing fourth.

Marquette’s Joe Lagrou will be making another trip to states after he finished third in the 112-pound Division Two weight class. Redmen teammate Wyatt Kuhlman also qualified for states by finishing fourth in the 140-pound weight class.

Gladstone will send three other wrestlers to the states, besides Brazeau.

Cole Hansen finished third at 152 pounds, Lane Matzke took fourth at 112 pounds, and Hunter Solis finished fourth at 119 pounds.

Negaunee’s Leo Heippi finished second at 189 pounds, after losing an 11-5 decision to Jeremy Miron of Sanford-Meridian in his D-3 title match. Kingsford’s Toby Wilcox finished third in his 145-pound bracket and will also be headed to Detroit for states.

In Division Four, these wrestlers qualified: Joe Derocha (Westwood, 112 pounds, 3rd), Jacob Gribbell (Newberry, 160 pounds, 4th), Lance Bowler (Negaunee, 189 pounds, 3rd), Caleb Brown (St. Ignace, 189 pounds, 4th), Isaac Brewster (Manistique, 285 pounds, 4th), Avry Corrigan (Bark River-Harris, 103 pounds, 3rd), Xavier Luoma (Gwinn, 130 pounds, 4th), and Austin Davis (Rudyard, 135 pounds, 4th).
