STILL PERFECT: Menominee Pushes Past Eskymos
ESCANABA---The Menominee High School girls basketball team went on a big run in the third quarter Tuesday night and pulled away from the Escanaba Eskymos, 70-50, in Escanaba. Emma Anderson led the way with 23 points as the Maroons stayed undefeated on the season with 19-0 record. "I think we've got good team chemistry, and the girls get along with each other really well," Menominee Coach Lucas Chouinard said. "And secondly. they work extremely hard. Our practices are extremely competitive. It's led to a great season for us so far." The Maroons led, 16-8, after one quarter, and 20-9, early in the second quarter, before the Eskymos closed to within 29-24 at halftime. At that point, Nicole Kamin had 13 points for the Eskymos and Anderson led the Maroons with a dozen points. "She's a great teammate," Chouinard said of Anderson. "That definately helps. She's very unselfish. But then she's got a great game where she plays inside and outside, which makes it very tough for anybody that tries to guard her." "With her unselfish play, she's always willing to set screens for her teammates, which leads to a lot of wide open shots for her as well." In the meantime, Anderson scored eleven points as the Maroons opened up a 47-30 lead with an 18-6 run in the third quarter. The Menominee defense caused many forced shots and turnovers in the second half, with the Eskymos unable to get the ball inside and settling for three-point baskets as they made a comeback attempt. Kamin led the Eskymos with 16 points. It was Escanaba's final home game of the season, with Menominee ready to host the district tournament next week. The Eskymos (11-7) travel to Sault Ste. Marie on Friday to close the regular season, then go to Houghton for the districts next Wednesday.
