Flivvers Win Great Northern Tennis Championship

KINGSFORD----The Kingsford Flivvers and Escanaba Eskymos both had entries in the finalsof the Great Northern Conference girls tennis championships Wednesday in Dickinson County. The conference championship went to the Flivvers as they took five first-place finishes and the Eskymos had to settle for one title and four runners-up.

Kingsford won the team title with 42 points. Marquette was second overall with 32.

Escanaba was third with 30 points, Gladstone took fourth with 26.

Menominee and West Iron County brought up the rear in the team standings.

Escanaba's lone championship was at #1 doubles, as Cathryn Wood and Braedyn Bosilovatz outlasted Gladstone's Bridget Becker and Nicolle Trudeau in a marathon three-set match. The match went 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.

Escanaba also had a couple of tight doubles matches, as Jalyn Dagenais and Zoe Berquist lost to Kingsford's Janay Walters and Ali VanRemortel at #2 doubles...and Audrey Wilson and Brianna Dault lost a three-set match to Marquette's Taylor Rovin and Brianna Buhl. All four EHS doubles teams made the finals.

In singles play, Escanaba's top player, Codi Jenshak, had a war against Kingsford's Sam Fleming in the semifinals.

Jenshak trailed, 5-2, in the deciding third set, and rallied to break serve twice to win the set, 7-5, and the match, 2-1.

Jenshak then faced West Iron County's Kylee Erickson in the final, and ran out of gas, losing, 7-5 and 6-0.

The Upper Peninsula Finals are next Wednesday in Marquette.
