HOPING TO PLAY: Baseball Teams Not Giving Up

The folks who run some of the Upper Peninsula’s American Legion Baseball programs say they’re not giving up on playing baseball at some point this summer here in the U.P.

It just won't be under the American Legion banner.

Iron Mountain Baseball posted on Facebook Thursday night that they’re letting all of the teams that are on the Golds’ schedule to keep the games that were planned, just not as “legion” games because the organization will not be sponsoring any baseball this summer.

The three-time defending Class A state champion Gladstone Indians took to Twitter on Wednesday to announce that its program also intends to hit the field this summer, once state restrictions are lifted and it is safe to play.

"The board met tonight via conference call, and everyone is on board. We're going to do our best to field senior and junior team this summer if allowed. We are putting things in motion to be prepared for the 2020 season. The team would not be affiliated with the American Legion, but would still be the Gladstone Indians."

American Legion Baseball announced last week that it would cancel its World Series and regional tournaments, and here in Michigan, after some initial confusion, the Michigan American Legion Department of Michigan cancelled this summer's season.

Little League Baseball is also taking a wait-and-see approach, with the sport on hold until May 11th around the world.
