Playoff Dream Alive: Eskymos Win on Homecoming

ESCANABA----The .500 mark never felt so good.

The Escanaba High School football team won its second straight game Friday night, overpowering the Iron Mountain Mountaineers, 42-14, at the Escanaba Athletic Field.

The win on Eskymo Homecoming brought the team's record to 4-4, and kept their slim playoff hopes alive.

The EHS boys (4-4)  need to beat Kingsford (7-1) next week, and then hope that there are not enough teams with six wins or more across the state to fill out the field of 256 state playoff qualifiers. Esky's playoff point total could lead them into the post-season.

A win next week would also give the Eskymos a share of the Great Northern Conference championship. Kingsford is 3-0 in the GNC while Escanaba is 2-1.

Iron Mountain led, 14-7, late in the second quarter after short touchdown runs by Jerry Pirkola and Paul Brooks. But the Eskymos scored twice in a span of 77 seconds to stuningly take a 21-14 lead into the halftime dressing room.

Jake Walker scored his first touchdown of the season with a 15-yard run, and then, after an Iron Mountain fumble, quarterback David Falish raced 45 yards for a touchdown. Then in the third quarter, the Eskymos grew their lead on TD runs by Falish and Walker.

Falish scored his third touchdown of the game with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, and the boys celebrated a big win on Homecoming. Falish also intecepted a pass on defense. T.J. Myrick was six-for-six on extra point kicks.

Falish had 202 yards on 22 carries and those three touchdowns on the ground.

Brooks led Iron Mountain (4-4) with 165 yards on 30 touches.
