Bay Norse Baseball Drops Doubleheader In Illinois

GLEN ELLYN, Ill.---The Bay College Norse baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader on Thursday in Illinois, falling to the College of DuPage Chaparrels, 7-6 and 14-1.

The Norse jumped off to a strong 4-0 lead in the first game, but Ian Schwalbach gave up three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning. The game was tight all the way, with Schwalbach leaving after five innings of work (five runs on six hits and two walks).

The Norse broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth inning when Grant Craft doubled home Carson Shea. It was Craft's second double of the game. But the Chaparrels tied it in the bottom of the sixth when Jimmy Heintz ripped a solo home run off Norse reliever Jared Crow.

After Crow walked two batters and hit another in the bottom of the seventh, Dante Sartorelli was brought in to pitch. He hit Anthony Perez with a pitch to bring home the winning run.

Earlier, things looked good for Bay, when they scored four times in the top of the first inning. Tanner Halvorson's RBI single brought home Shea with the first run of the game. Craft followed with his first RBI double of the game, then Hector Araguayan doubled home Craft. The final run of that first inning came home on an RBI single by Billy Garcia.

But that would be the last of the celebrating for the Norse on this quick road trip. The Norse took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a RBI hit by Craft, but they would not score again. The Chaparrels blasted four home runs in the game, three of them against starting pitcher Jack Bower. Bower took the loss, retiring only two batters in the first inning before being pulled.

Bay College fell to 3-26 on the season. The Chaps improved to 22-17 on the season.

The Minnesota Post Grad Baseball Club is coming to Escanaba for four games this weekend: doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday will start at 12:00 noon.
