11-0: Eskymos Stay Perfect With Win In Wisconsin
PESHTIGO, Wis.---The Escanaba High School baseball team stayed undefeated Friday by beating a strong Peshtigo Bulldogs team, 11-4, in Wisconsin. The Eskymos scored seven runs in the fourth inning to break open a close game.
The Eskymos improved to 11-0 on the season, following up a doubleheader win over Negaunee the night before. That Eskymos led 2-1 in the fourth inning before they batted around, and then some, in that inning. Brett Schlenvogt led off with a walk, Trent Lawson singled, and Tyler Lawson drew a walk to load the bases. Schlenvogt scored on a passed ball, then Nick Kolich walked to reload the bases. Hunter Lancour followed with a hard-hit shot to right-center field, bringing home both Lawson boys. That made it 5-1. Lancour ended up with three hits on the night. Bryant Maki struck out, but the ball got away and Kolich scored to make it 6-1. Two more walks loaded the bases for a third time, then Jared Hason got a base hit to center field to make it 7-1. Schlenvogt walked (again) to force home another run, then Trent Lawson's ground ball brought home the final run of the inning. Peshtigo scored two runs on a pair of Eskymo errors in the bottom of the fourth to close to within 9-3, and the Bulldogs scored another unearned run in the fifth inning. But Escanaba scored twice in the sixth inning as the Bulldogs also committed two errors, and Tyler Lawson took advantage with a two-run single to make it 11-4. Earlier, Escanaba took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Kolich singled home Lawson, and then scored on a Riley Lamb ground ball. Kolich had the defensive play of the game in the bottom of the second inning when he dove to catch a pop fly beyond second base, and he made the throw back to first base for the double play. Tyler Lawson was on base all five times with two hits and three walks. His little brother Trent had two hits from the #9 hole. Collin Arnt earned the win on the mound, going 5 2/3 innings before leaving when he reached 75 pitches. He gave up five hits and four runs, but none of the runs were earned. Kolich pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and gave up a walk and a hit, but no runs. Escanaba takes the weekend off, and will travel to Marquette Monday night. The Eskymos will then visit Gladstone for a single game Tuesday afternoon at 4:00. That game will be broadcast live on the Eskymo Baseball Network (FM-93.5, AM-600, and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.) |
