EUP Wood Ducks Win 2 Games At Legion Tourney
ESCANABA---The Eastern Upper Peninsula Wood Ducks American Legion Baseball team won twice at the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament on Friday in Delta County. The Wood Ducks beat the Copper Country Flames, 9-5, and then turned back the host Escanaba Cubs, 7-1. The game against Copper Country in Gladstone was a long one, and it was played under hot, sunny, and extremely windy conditions at the Gladstone Sports Park. In the night game, pitcher Dalton Graham, who threw at Bay College last season, got the victory in his adopted hometown. The game was scoreless for three innings as Noah Lancour pitched out of trouble for Escanaba, but in the fourth inning, The EUP scored four times to take control of the game. Lancour hit two batters in that inning and the Cubs made three errors, including one on a throw to the plate from center field that scored a run, and a bad throw from third base that brought home two more runs. Offensively, the Cubs could not keep the ball away from EUP third baseman Michael Bontrager, who made three plays on hard shots to the hot corner, including a double play. Escanaba managed only two base hits in the game. EUP had just four hits. EUP is 2-0 in the tournament with games against Iron Mountain Saturday morning at 10:30 on Bay College's field, and against Bark River Saturday at 1:30 in Escanaba. That game will be broadcast on FM-93.5 and AM-600 in Escanaba and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
