GWINN---
The Marquette County Mavericks avenged two earlier losses to the Escanaba "Mikey D Beer Cave" Polecats to win the Superiorland Baseball championship Monday night, 10-5, in Gwinn. Jeff Krejcik had a home run, double, and five runs batted in for Marquette.

Krejcik's two-run homer in the first inning came after the Escanaba shortstop lost a two-out pop up in the sun and dropped it. That kept the inning going against Escanaba pitcher Elliot Danhoff, who threw at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. His fastball was lively, but Krejcik put one of them over the left field fence.

Escanaba got a run back in the bottom of the first inning on a Brandon Punzel RBI single, and then in the bottom of the second, Sam Hall delivered a two-run single to put Esky in front, 3-2. Ben Snyder followed with an RBI single, giving Escanaba a 4-2 lead.

A 5-3 double play squelched the Escanaba rally, and Marquette came back against Danhoff, who had trouble throwing strikes. In the top of the third inning, a leadoff single by James Larsen II was followed by a throwing error on a stolen base attempt, and then four straight walks.

All of a sudden, Escanaba trailed 5-4, before Danhoff recovered to get three straight outs with the bases loaded to stop the bleeding.

Marquette County brought in lefty Jake Adriano to throw, and as he did in his Ishpeming youth days, he kept the Escanaba batters off balance, allowing only two runs over five innings of relief.

In the fourth inning, Danhoff got into trouble again when he gave up back to back hits to Larsen and Spencer Larson. An intentional walk to Krejcik loaded the bases, and the move worked when Steve Hinstala popped up to end the threat.

But in the fifth inning, Danhoff's wildness caught up to him, With the bases loladed, he hyit both Larson and Hintsala, bringing in the sixth and sevnth runs. Then Krejcik put the game out of reach with a two-run double to the left field fence, making it a 9-4 Maverick lead.

Jon Bintner came on to pitch the final two innings for Escanaba (on a Krejcik sac fly), and allowed one run. Hanson's sacrafice fly brought in Esky's final run in the sixth inning.
