Hematites Win; Maroons, Saints Lose In Semifinals

MARQUETTE----Three Upper Peninsula high school football teams played in state semifinal games on Saturday. The Ishpeming Hematities beat Pewamo-Westphalia, 8-7, to advance to the Division Seven state championship game next week in Detroit.

The Menominee Maroons suffered a heartbreaking 20-17 loss to Grand Rapids West Catholic in Division Five. And in Division Eight, St. Ignace lost to Beal City, 25-7.

The game summaries are posted below.

ISHPEMING 8, PEWAMO-WESTPHALIA 7---The Ishpeming Hematites used a big-play defensive effort to earn a trip to Detroit's Ford Field. The Hematites topped Pewamo Westphalia from the Lansing area, 8-7, Saturday at the Superior Dome.

The Pirates' only touchdown of the game came on a broken play in the second quarter, when quarterback Colin Nehrinberg threw a pass that bounced off two sets of hands and landed in the arms of Lane Simon. He scampered 94 yards to give PW the lead.

In the third quarter, the Hematities got their longest drove of the game, a 70-yarder that ended with a ten-yard run by Eric Kostreva. Then quarterback Alex Briones ran in the two-point conversion to give Ishpeming an 8-7 lead.

It stayed that way as the Ishpeming defense continued to make big plays. Briones had an interception in the Red Zone in the fourth quarter, his second of the game. And the Hematites sealed the deal with a Hunter Wirtanen interception qith 1:37 left.

Ishpeming (12-1) faces Detroit Loyola (13-0) in the Division Seven state championship game next Saturday morning at 10:00 at Ford Field. P-W finished its season 9-4.

BEAL CITY 25, ST. IGNACE 7---In a Division Eight semifinal between two unbeaten teams, the Beal City Aggies turned back the St. Ignace Saints, 25-7, at Traverse City's Thirlby Field Saturday afternoon.

Ty Rollin scored all three touchdowns for the Aggies, and German exchange student Paul Anders kicked two long field goals to give Beal City the edge. Rollin ran for 145 yards, which is more than the entire Saints team had against the Aggie defense.

The Saints led, 7-6, in the second quarter before Rollin scored right before halftime to give Beal City the lead. The Saimts could get nothing going in the second half as the Aggie defense intercepted three passes. St. Ignace finished the season 12-1.

Beal City (13-0) faces Harbor Beach in the Division Eight state championship game next Saturday afternoon at 4:30 at Detroit's Ford Field.

GRAND RAPIDS WEST CATHOLIC 20, MENOMINEE 17---The third time was not the charm for the Menominee Maroons football team Saturday at the Superior Dome. After losing twice to Grand Rapids West Catholic in the state semifinals in recent years, the Falcons pulled out a 20-17 win over the Maroons to advance to Ford Field.

GRWC quarterback Travis Russell threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to David Kuzma with 58 seconds to play to put the Falcons in front. The Maroons had one last gasp, completing a couple of long passes, but the game ended on the GRWC 15 yard-line.

Early on, Menominee looked like it would avenge those earlier loses to GRWC. The Maroons took a 14-0 lead on a couple of Devon Harris touchdown passes in the first quarter. An Andy Corey touchdown run brought the Falcons to within 14-7 at the half.

In the third quarter, a deflected pass went for a five-yard touchdown, pulling the Falcons to a 14-14 tie. The Maroons regained the lead at 17-14 on a 27-yard field goal by Evan Pohlmann with 4:47 left in the fourth quarter.

That set up the final GRWC drive, which was enough to send the Falcons (10-3) into next week's Division Five state championship game against Portland. That game will be played at 4:30 at Ford Field. Menominee finished the season with an 11-2 record.
