Gladstone On Cruise Control Against Big Bay deNoc

The Gladstone Braves girls basketball team knew that it would beat the Big Bay Lady Bears Thursday night, and the Big Bay girls that they could not compete on the scoreboard against the Class B Braves. And in the end, Gladstone won the game, 56-19.

And for Big Bay, a chance to get better, and to see some quality competition. Gladstone used all ten of its players freely throughout the night. The normal starting five players were on the court for four minutes, then the "bench five" played the next four minutes. That routine was done for all 32 minutes of the game. "It was an opportunity for us to get different people on the floor, in different combinations," Gladstone Coach Karl Dollhopf said. "We were able to work on some half-court sets, both offensively and defensively. "Offensively, I didn't think we shared the ball well in the first half, but we did in the second half, so I was happy about that." Big Bay, meanwhile, had just seven players on its roster. They all played extensively.

Alexis St. Cyr had 13 points and Sadie Strasser had 12 points to lead the Braves. Sami Sundling scored seven points for Big Bay. Gladstone improved to 6-5 on the season. Big Bay deNoc fell to 2-10. "I thought in the second half, we played a little 'cleaner'," Dollhopf said. "We only had two turnovers in the half, so I was pleased with that. "We were able to work on some things that will help us next week. Our defense was good. We gave up seven points at halftime, so I was happy with that." The Braves kicked off a five-game homestand with the win, and will face two tough opponents next week: Negaunee on Tuesday and Menominee on Thursday. "Negaunee is a real good team," Dollhopf said. "They're not real flashy. They just don't make a lot of mistakes. They shoot the ball well. We have to play a clean game against them. They're not going to give us a lot of possessions. I think it will be a challenge." The Braves-Menominee game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com, on Thursday, Feb. 2.
