Mattson Takes All-Around But Negaunee Wins Meet

ESCANABA---The margin of victory can be razor-thin in some high school sports. Especially in cheerleading and gymnastics, where points are earned by judges' opinions, and then divided to come up with an average score for an event.

But even so, the margin in Monday night's gymnastics meet between the Escanaba Eskymos and Negaunee Miners was a bit thinner than usual.

Negaunee won the meet by less than one point, 114.15-113.58. It was a "make-up" match from a January 3rd cancellation.

Escanaba's Erin Mattson won the "all-around" championship with 32.80 points. Teammate Erika Carne was second with 27.58 points. Mattson won the floor (8.50), bars (8.40), and vault (8.15). And Mattson finished second in the beam.

Negaunee's Kate Rasmussen won the beam (7.90) and she finished second in the bars. Escanaba's Maggie Richardson finished second in the floor routine and she was fourth in the bars. Negaunee's Katie Torreano finished second in the vault.
