Jets Get Paybacks In 'Civil War' Win Over Carney

POWERS---Things were going just fine for the Carney-Nadeau High School basketball team Tuesday night as the boys played their arch-rivals, the North Central Jets.

The Wolves had the fast-paced tempo that they love, and they led, 20-14, after one quarter of play. The Carney lead grew to 29-17 midway through the second quarter.

Carney's Dionte Blahnik drives inside against two NCA defenders Tuesday.
But there was one problem. Carney's star player, Wade Schetter, was in foul trouble. He was given three personal fouls in the first five minutes of the game. And when he got a fourth personal foul midway through the  second quarter, the momentum in the game turned.

Carney was ahead by twelve, but without the Wolves'  leader on the court, NCA went on a 9-2 run and closed to within 31-26 at halftime.

Schetter played the entire second half saddled by those four fouls. He has unable to play as aggressvely on defense as normal, and the Jets took full advantage.

North Central took a 39-38 lead entering the fourth quarter as Travis Vincent scored on a put-back with time running out in the third quarter.

Carney's last-second attempt to tie fails.
Schetter nailed a three-pointer from NBA territory early in the third quarter to tie the game at 41-41, but Josh Granquist answered with a long ball of his own to put the home-standing Jets back in front.

As time ticked down on the game, Schetter retied the game at 49-49 with an off-balance jumper. But the Jets came back down court and got a clutch three from Trevor Ekberg to put North Central back in front, 52-49, with a minute left in the fourth quarter.

Wade Schetter is surrounded by three Jets.
The Wolves had several chances to tie the game in the closing seconds. The last attempt was a deep "three" by Keenan Lampinen, which clanked off the rim as time expired. The game was played under a tournament atmosphere, with the NCA parking lot completely full with cars and trucks.

With the win, North Central (8-2) reversed its recent fortunes against the Wolves.

This goes back to last spring's district tournament game that turned in Carney's favor after a former NCA student threw a Coke bottle onto the court in the closing seconds, allowing Carney to gain possession for Schetter to nail a game-winning shot.

On this night, Schetter led the Wolves (8-3) with 20 points. Carney has lost three of four games after a 7-0 start.

North Central got 15 points from Ekberg, 14 from Rob Granquist, and 13 from Vincent.
