Keweenaw Storm Girls Fall In National Title Game

SAN JOSE, Calif.---The dream came to an abrupt end for the Keweenaw Storm U19 girls hockey team Sunday night. A shot that deflected off of a skate made its way into the Keweenaw net in double overtime, and the Chazy (N.Y.) Lady Flyers beat the U.P. girls, 3-2, in the national championship game in San Jose, Calif.

Jessica Schlaff had scored goals late in the second period and early in the third to help the Storm rally from a 2-0 deficit to force the overtime session.

Keweenaw had defeated this team from upstate New York in a pool play game earlier in the tournament, and the U.P. girls outshot the Lady Flyers 30-18 in this one. But the "puck luck" didn't go with the Yoopers on this night. Alexis Pyykkonen assisted on both of Schlaff's goals in Sunday night's game. Keweenaw went 5-1 at Nationals.

Earlier on Sunday, Keweenaw beat the Colorado Tigers, 2-1, in the national semifinals. Madison Labyak and Bailey Raffaelli scored the goals for the Storm.
