Gladstone Braves Dominate In Superior Dome Meet

MARQUETTE----The Gladstone Braves boys track team was in unfamiliar territory on Tuesday, but the boys made themselves at home quite nicely inside the Superior Dome.

After not competing in the Dome for the past several years, the Braves signed up for the Marquette Invitational and strolled to an impressive team victory. Gladstone won the boys event with 101 points. Menominee was second with 69 points.

"We basically took our kids from a small gym to a big gym," Gladstone Athletic Director Matt Houle said, noting that the late winter has basically put spring sports on hold.

Inside the Dome, the Braves were dominant, setting a pair of Superior Dome records along the way. Jared Vuksan did that in the shot put (54 feet, 6 inches) and Justin Pederson did it in the lomg jump (21 feet, .09 inches).

Vuksan's win was part of a Gladstone clean sweep in the shot-put, as Cody Malanowski took second and Steve Srom placed third.

Pederson was second in the high jump behind Newberry's James Sutton.

Gladstone's Zach Sturdy was the winner in the pole vault at 12-feet even. Sturdy won the event by almost two full feet over his next opponents. And Gladstone's Chris Sedenquist won the 400 meter run in 53.66 seconds.

The Braves' 1600-meter relay team of Kyle Kleiman, Sedenquist, Andrew Olesak, and Hunter Curtis took first place in 3:55.20.

The Escanaba Eskymos finished fourth in the meet with 41 points. Senior Andrew Stenberg was second in the 3200 (10:47.52) and was fourth in the 1600 (4:58.40).

Eskymo teammate Eric Cousineau was third in the 3200 (10:54.86). And Eskymo junior Jordan Ogren placed third in the 800-meter run (2:18.16).

The Eskymos' 1600-meter relay team finished a fraction of a second behind Gladstone and ended up with second place. Escanaba's 3200 relay team was also runners-up.

In the girls meet, the Marquette Redettes were head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Marquette had 124 points, while Sault Ste. Marie was a distant second with 59 points. Escanaba finished fourth with 42 points, and Gladstone was tenth with 16.

The Eskymos got a third place finish from Sunny Martineau in the 55-meter dash. And Escanaba's 3200-meter relay team of Isabelle Wellman, Amy Giese, Brittinie Larson, and Aubree Peterson took second place, behind Marquette.

Escanaba's lone victory was in the pole vault, where Holly Ettenhofer won with a score of 7-feet-6 inches. Gladstone's Jamie Snoaert was tied for third in that event. The Braves' Iris Robare was third in the long jump in 14 feet, 11.6 inches.

Marquette got wins in the 800 and 1600 from Lindsey Rudden, and Shayla Huebner won the 400. The Redettes did well in the longer races, too, as they got second, third and fourth place in the 3200...and won the 1600 relay.

And Marquette's Hunter Viitala easily won the high jump, while Manistique's Monica Giles won the shot put and Kingsford's Carlee Benzie won the long jump.
