Delta County Teams Play (Some) Softball Downstate

PETOSKEY/FLINT---The Escanaba Eskymos, Gladstone Braves, and Rapid River Rockets all went below the Mackinac Bridge to play some softball this weekend.

All three teams managed to get some games in before Mother Nature and Old Man Winter won yet again.

In Petoskey, the Gladstone Braves beat the Reese Rockets, 4-1. Tinner Sharon pitched the entire way for the Braves, pleasing Gladstone Coach Jerry Smith.

"Tinner threw well. She really looked good," Smith said. "They all played well. Every time we play Reese it's always back and forth with them."

Gladstone was leading Detroit Country Day, 7-0, in the third inning when the weather turned nasty. "It was cold and miserable," Smith said. "When we were leaving, there were big snowflakes falling." The Braves are now 15-1 on the season.

Meanwhile, the Eskymos were playing at the same tournament and beat the Onaway Cardinals, 7-1. The Eskymos were supposed to play two more games on Saturday, and they were supposed play two games Friday in Alpena...but they were all cancelled.

Escanaba has played just two games this season, plus three games inside the Superior Dome back in March. Escanaba travels to Marquette on Monday, weather permitting.

The Eskymos are now 3-2 on the season.

Rapid River played further downstate, so it took longer for the bad weather to get there.

On Friday, the Rockets played a doubleheader in Davison, and got a split.

The Cardinals won the first game, 6-5, even though Neena Brockway hit a home run. The Rockets won the second game of the doubleheader, 8-7.

Then on Saturday, the Rockets played at a tournament in Flint. The first game was against the Grand Blanc Bobcats, and Rapid River's batting was strong as Brockway, Savannah Stenlund, Erika Schwartz all hit home runs. But Grand Blanc won, 11-7.

The Rockets  (6-11) then faced Flint Powers Catholic, and Averi Kanyuh had the game-winning triple as Rapid River won, 4-3.

Rapid River then lost to Alpena, 6-0, as the rain started pouring down. The team was supposed to play a fourth game, but the tournament was stopped at that point. The Rockets will be on the road again on Monday when they travel to Munising.
