Eskymo Tennis Wins; Board Votes To End Program

GLADSTONE---The Escanaba Eskymos boys tennis program is on life support after the school board voted Tuesday night to eliminate the program due to budget cuts.

Unless the cuts are reversed, the Eskymo tennis program will end, as will the girls gymnastics program. Tuesday's board vote was part of a plan to deal with a $1.8 million budget deficit. Cutting those two sports, as well as some junior high basketball teams, would save the district a total of roughly $75,000 (mostly from transportation).

All of that aside, the Eskymos went out and took care of business against the Braves. The only win for Gladstone was by Aaron Parmet at #1 singles, as he beat John Brant, 6-0, 6-1. Escanaba got an emotional win from Steve Wood at #3 singles.

Wood, playing just days after his father's sudden death, defeated John Hammar in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Funeral services for Wood's dad, Terry, are set for Thursday.

"We had a good day of tennis today," Escanaba Coach Jim Hansen said. "Everybody played well regardless of score or win loss. We are getting some of the rust off of our strategy and technique. We got some more guys experience today."
