Gladstone Boys, Marquette Girls Dominate Regional

ESCANABA---The Gladstone Braves will be well-represented at the Upper Peninsula Track and Field Finals on June 1st.  The boys took care of business at the MHSAA Division One Regional track meet on Thursday, rolling to a team championship and sending nearly the entire roster of boys to the U.P. Finals in Kingsford.

At the same time, in the girls meet, the Marquette Redettes were even more dominant, winning nearly every event and qualifying girls for the U.P. Finals in numerous events.

Gladstone's strength, as always, was in the field events.

In the shot-put, Gladstone qualified three of the four boys who will be in Kingsford, with senior Jared Vuksan leading the way by throwin 52 feet, 2 inches. Cody Malanowski was second and Steve Strom was fourth.

In the discuss, Vuksan dominated with a throw of 140 feet, seven inches. Malanowski also qualified by finishing second (127'10).

Zach Sturdy shook off a recent injury by winning the pole vault (11'06). The Braves took all four qualifying positions, with Jacob Rosa, Jared Syverson, and Austin Collette taking second, third, and fourth.

Braves senior Justin Pederson was also dominating, winning three events.

He won the long jump (20'07), high jump (5'10), and then he shattered a school record in the 100 meter dash. Pederson won it in 10.78, amongst the fastest times locally in several years.

Escanaba continued its strength in the distance runs, but finished fourth out of five teams in the team score. Eskymo Eric Cousineau won the 3200 and teammate Andrew Stenberg was third.

In the 3200 relay, the EHS team of Cousineau, Stenberg, Jordan Ogren, and Jake Walker defeated the Marquette team by seven seconds, finishing in 8:36.38.

The Eskymo 1600 meter relay team of Ogren, Collin Barnhart, Quinlan Hillesheim, and Jake Walker won the race in 3:38.49, just a fraction of a second ahead of the Gladstone team. In the 800 run, Walker finished second and Ogren qualified in third place.


Menominee boys get 1st, 2nd in hurdles
Menominee was second in the team score, and was strong in the hurdles. Bryan Hines won both the 110 and 300 hurdles, with teammate Tyler Harmon taking second in both races. Hines was also a part of Menominee's winning 400-meter relay team.

In the team score, Gladstone had 66 points. Menominee was second with 43, Marquette was third (35), Escanaba was fourth (29), and Sault Ste. Marie was fifth (14).

MARQUETTE GIRLS DOMINATE---In the girls' Division One regional, Marquette won up and down the line-up to end up with 84 points. Sault Ste. Marie was a distant second with 35 points. Menominee and Escanaba finished tied with 25 points, and Gladstone had 18 points and finished last.


Marquette's Lindsay Rudden Wins 1600 run
Marquette's Lindsey Rudden won the 800 and 1600, and was part of the winning 3200 relay team.

Teammate Hunter Viitala won the 300 hurdles, was part of the winning 800 relay team, and finished tied for first with Menominee's Amanda Pedersen in the high jump. Hanna Johnson won the 100 hurdles. And Shayla Huebner was part of the winning 3200 relay team, and she won the 400.

It was a red-and-white title wave.

Sault Ste. Marie's Bree Swan won the 100 and the 200, and was second in the 400.

Locally, Gladstone's Andrea Starr was second in the 100 hurdles. Escanaba's Amy Giese qualified fourth in the 1600 run, and was part of the 3200 relay team that finished second.

Escanaba's Lynsey Collins and Sunny Martineau qualified third and fourth in the 300 hurdles, and Collins was also fourth in the 200 dash.

Gladstone's 400-meter relay team qualified in third place, Escanaba was fourth.
