The Escanaba Eskymos and Gladstone Braves met for the second time in three days in softball on Monday, and this time, the result was different. The Braves beat the Eskymos, 1-0, to win the championship of the Escanaba tournament on Saturday, but in the return trip to Lemmerand Park on Monday, Gladstone could not repeat the feet against its rivals. It was a full day of softball on Saturday as the Escanaba Eskymos hosted the third annual Candy Swetkis SISU Strikefest at Lemmerand Park. The Gladstone Braves and Iron Mountain Mountaineers baseball teams braved the cold, windy conditions Thursday night to play a rather entertaining game at Don Olsen Field in Gladstone. The Braves trailed the whole game, but pulled it out in extra innings, 3-2. Gladstone then won the second game on the mercy rule, 11-1. The Michigan High School Athletic Association Representative Council has decided to make changes to the football playoff procedures. Starting this fall, all regions will be seeded, based on playoff points, with seeds 1, 4, 5, and 8 going into one district, and seeds 2, 3, 6, and 7 going into another district. The council also approved a proposal to suspend any official who makes aggressive or intentional contact with a student or official. And in basketball, if a score crosses the mercy rule threshhold, the game will stay on a running clock even if the margin gets closer. Click the above headline for details.
The Bay College Norse women's softball season officially ended on Sunday with 18-5 and 19-6 losses to the Alpena Community College Lumberjacks, which capped off a grueling six games in three days to finish up the MCCAA North Conference schedule. The Escanaba Eskymos lost twice in downstate Clio on Friday. The first game was a classic, with the fourth-ranked Mustangs winning, 1-0. Pitcher Addie Taylor threw a no-hitter for Clio, and Escanaba senior Landry Bray threw a one-hitter. That one hit, by Clio's Summer Stevens, was an RBI double in the third inning. The Escanaba Eskymos and Negaunee Miners shivvered through two sloppy baseball games Wednesday night in Negaunee, and each team ended up with something to smile about....and something to complain about. Eric Gruber has been named the 10th head coach of the Michigan Tech women's basketball program, Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Suzanne Sanregret announced Monday. Gruber comes to Tech from NCAA Division I Southern Illinois Edwardsville, where he was an assistant women's basketball coach for the past three seasons. A group of 18 reporters from across the entire U.P. met last week in Marquette to make the selections. Gladstone Braves senior Lillie Johnson was chosen as Miuss Basketball, along with being the Division 1-3 Player of the Year and a member of the all-class Dream Team. Northern Michigan Athletics has named Keil Ganz as its next head men's basketball coach, Athletic Director Rick Comley announced Friday. Ganz returns to Marquette after spending the 2025-26 season as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. This marks his third stint with the Wildcats program, as he previously served as associate head coach during the 2024-25 season and as an assistant coach in 2023-24, following an earlier stop in 2019-20. The longtime coach of the Gogebic Community College Samsons basketball team is retiring. Dennis Mackey announced on Thursday that he will be retiring as of May 31st, after 38 years of teaching and coaching at the Ironwood school. He won more than 500 games during 19 years of coaching the women's team, followed by 19 more years coaching the men's team. The Grand Valley State women's basketball team etched their name in the history books once again, winning their second straight National Championship, and the second in program history. The Lakers led wire-to-wire in a 72-49 victory over IUP in the championship game. Escanaba graduate Nicole Kamin was named the Elite Eight MVP and had 18 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three blocked shots in Saturday's championship game.
