Manistique High School graduate Mike Nagy won the Michigan Junior Amateur Golf Tournament championship Thursday in Flint. He defeated Otto Black of Pinckney Michigan 3-and-1 to win the title of the 34th annual event. The 18-year-old Nagy will attend the University of Tennessee this fall on a golf scholarship. Leah Wigger shot a 6-under 66 in the second round of the Island Resort Championship on Saturday to take a two-shot lead over Aimee Neff.

Kevin Gendron burned up the Menominee North Shore golf course on Monday, carding a 74 to lead the Escanaba Eskymos to a third place finish at the Menominee Invitational. Marinette won the six-team invite, while Marquette took second. As a team, the Eskymos shot a 331, six shots behind Marinette. The Gladstone Braves finished fifth with 347 strokes. The Escanaba High School boys golf team finished in fifth place at the Kiwanis Invitational Tuesday at the Wawonowin Golf Course near Ishpeming. There were 13 teams at the event. The Eskymos had 349 strokes, one behind fourth place Houghton. Eskymo senior Kevin Gendron shot a 79, good for second place overall behind medalist Mike Nagy of Manistique, who shot a 74. The LPGA Futures Tour returns to the Upper Peninsula in late June, with some of the world's best lady golfers comping to compete for money...and a possible spot on the main LPGA Tour next year. There will be 150 golfers representing at least 30 countries at the Island Resort and Casino Championship, which will be held June 29th through July 1st at the Sweetgrass Golf Course in Harris.

The conditions were less than ideal, but four high school golf teams managed to get in a quadrangular meet Thursday at the Escanaba Country Club. In the girls meet, Escanaba edged Gladstone 207-208, with Marquette third and Kingsford fourth. In the boys meet, Marquette won with 316 strokes. The Escanaba High School boys golf team opened the 2012 season on Monday placing first in the eight-team Gladstone Invitational. The Eskymos had 317 strokes, five better than second-place Marquette. Menominee was third with 335 strokes.
Manistique's Mike Nagy and Nick LaFave were the medalists in the scramble format, shooting a 71. Escanaba's Kevin Gendron and Phil LaMarch were second with 73's. Gladstone's Drew Scheeneman and Jake Peterson were tied for second with 73's.
It was the one night of the year where members of all of the Escanaba High School spring sports teams were able to gather in one place. The annual "Meet The Eskymos" event was held Wednesday night at the Escanaba High School Commons. The players and coaches for the baseball, softball, tennis, track, and golf teams were all on hand to talk about their teams.
