The Escanaba High School hockey team got a monster performance from co-captain Graham Johnson on Friday, and overwhelmed the Traverse City Central Trojans, 5-0, at the Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City. -The Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association has released its 2025 All-UP football teams. A group of 19 reporters from every corner of the UP voted on the best-of-the-best during a meeting at Northern Michigan University. Menominee standout quarterback Tanner Theuerkauf led the way in the voting by being an unanimous pick for Dream Team quarterback, Offensive Player of the Year, and as Mr. Football for the regioin's best overall player. Escanaba High School senior Lenny Peacock officially signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Western Michigan University, fulfilling a dream to play at an NCAA Division One school. A great season came to an end for the Escanaba High School football team on Saturday as the Eskymos lost to the Big Rapids Cardinals, 48-18, in the MHSAA Division Four district championship game at the Escanaba Athletic Field. The Escanaba High School football team wrapped up the regular season with a 38-12 win over the rival Gladstone Braves Friday night in Escanaba. The Eskymos finished with an 8-1 record, with only a 34-30 loss to Gaylord as a blemish, and they'll move on to the MHSAA playoffs with a game next Saturday afternoon in Escanaba against a still-to-be-determined team. The Escanaba High School Gym was full of spikes and digs on Saturday as the annual Elks Invitational was held on a hot, humid day. Ten teams played four pool matches, and the top four teams advanced to the semifinals. A ceremony was held Tuesday night to celebrate the brand new bleachers at the Escanaba football stadium. The Eskymo Fan Club spearheaded the $450,000 project, which stripped out all of the old wooden seats and replaced them with new metal seats. They also put in 156 “stadium seats”.
The fall season is underway for 1,042 student athletes on 76 high schools teams participating in the Michigan State High School Clay Target League programs. The MISHSCTL is a part of the USA Clay Target League, which provides clay target shooting sports as an extracurricular activity to thousands of schools nationwide. There are two Upper Peninsula high school teams with students taking part in these actitivies: Escanaba and Norway High Schools.
The Escanaba High School football team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 27-10 win over the defending conference champion Petoskey Northmen Friday night in Petokey. Senior quarterback Nolan Bink threw three touchdown passes, two of them to Brody Ison and one to Alex Stalboerger. Senior placekicker Graham Johnson kicked a school-record 42-yard field goal in the win.
The Escanaba High School football team rallied from eleven points down in the final quarter to beat the Kingsford Flivvers, 21-18, Thursday night, at the Escanaba Athletic Field. Brody Ison’s “jump-pass” to Alex Stolboerger for a touchdown put the Eskymos in the lead with three minutes left, and Keagan Braun's interception with 27 seconds left sealed the win.
As high school sports practices begin, and some of the first contests are played in some sports, the Michigan High School Athletic Association is again ramping up awareness of necessary hot-weather precautions as schools and families prepare for activity. Practices for all Fall 2025 sports – cross country, football, boys soccer, girls tennis, and volleyball began on Monday. The first soccer, tennis, volleyball, and cross cluntry contests are this weekend.

The 78th annual Michigan-Wisconsin Open Tennis Tournament got underway Saturday in Escanaba's Ludington Park. The singles competition was held in several divisions. In the Class A men's competition, Juan Guerra won the title in straight sets (6-3, 6-4), and in Class B, Escanaba native Chris Ogren defeated Aaron Isenhart of Elk Rapids in three sets, taking the third set, 6-4. The competition continues on Sunday with doubles matches, both in Ludington Park and at the Abrahamson Courts.
Five Delta County graduating high school softball players played their final high school game on Tuesday in the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association's All-Star games at Davenport University.

The MHSAA Division One UP Finals were held Wednesday, and the Escanaba Eskymos cruised to the to the girls championship at the Sweetgrass Golf Course. The Eskymos beat second place Marquette by 17 strokes, 382-399. Eskymo junior Kamrie Scott won her second straight UP championship by shooting an 8-over par 80. Menominee’s Lexi Marineau was runner up after shooting a 90. Escanaba’s Dani Hughes finished third with a 93. It’s the third UP championship in four years for Escanaba.
The Marquette Sentinels edged the Escanaba Eskymos to win the MHSAA Division One boys UP championship on Wednesday at the Sage Run Golf Course. The Sentinels won by eleven strokes (311-322), to repeat as UP Champions. Junior Boden Moore shot a two-under 70 to win medalist honors. Westwood senior Tanner Annala was runner-up, finishing three strokes back with a 73, and Iron Mountain’s Cooper Pigeon was third with a 77.
