U.P. Boys Basketball Teams Cited For Good Grades

LANSING---The Escanaba Eskymos, Marquette Redmen, Westwood Patriots, Gwinn Model Towners, Newberry Indians, and Lake Linden Hubbell-Lakes have all had their boys basketball teams recognized for their good success in the classroom.

All were honored by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan as All-State Academic Teams. Their grade point averages, as teams, were over 3.1, and that earned "honorable mention" recognition for all six U.P. schools in their respective classes.

In Class B, the Escanaba boys piled up a 3.146 grade point average, good for 34th-best amongst all Class B schools in Michigan.

In Class A, Marquette's cumulative GPA was 3.255, good for 30th place statewide.

In Class C, Westwood's GPA was 3.262 (30th in state), Gwinn's was 3.172 (34th statewide), and Newberry's was 3.168 (35th in Michigan).

The only Class D boys basketball team to make the list was Lake Linden-Hubbell, which had a 3.117 grade point average, good for 19th in the state in that class.

The boys basketball teams that had the highest grade point averages in the state were: Alpena (Class A, 3.658), who is coached by Escanaba native and NMU grad John Pintar.

Also...Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook (Class B, 3.703), New Lothrop (Class C, 3.681), and St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic (Class D, 3.686).
