Marinette Rallies Past Menominee In Legion Rivalry
MARINETTE, Wis.---For five innings, it was a pitcher's duel between Menominee's Bryce Tharp and Marinette's Matt Osterberg. Then after a flurry of runs in the final two innings, Marinette won the Fourth of July border battle, 4-3, at Pedersen Ballpark. Trey Bretl's one-out single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Marinette the win, beating the Red Wave for the second time in less than a week. Osterberg took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Menominee's Adam Nolde broke it up with a single. The Red Wave played some small ball and put three runs on the board. But in the bottom of the sixth, Marinette finally got to Tharp, scoring two runs, and stranding the bases loaded. And then it was "small ball" that did in Tharp in the seventh. Austin Marquart led off with an infield hit, then speedster James Jigielski put down a perfect bunt up the third base line for a single. Jack Farley's sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third, then Tharp threw a wild pitch, bringing home the tying run. With a runner on third and one out, the Red Wave intentionally walked both Adam Wahl and Nick Daye. That brought up Bretl, who hit one to right, ending the game. Marinette also beat Menominee, 11-7, last Saturday night in the Firecracker Tournament. The two teams will meet for the final time next Wednesday at Spies Field. MARQUETTE BLUES 18, MARQUETTE REDS 5---The battle between the older Blues and younger Reds has been going on for years on the Fourth of July, and on Tuesday, the Blues held just a 6-5 lead in the fourth inning before they blew the game open. Blake Henriksen went 4-for-4 with five runs batted in for the Blues. Alec Beauchamp had three hits and Jakob Rogers drove in three runs. The Blues outhit the Reds, 17-3. |
