Escanaba Wins Finale; GLHC Awards Announced
HOUGHTON---The Escanaba High School hockey team closed the regular season with a 6-2 win over the Painesdale-Jeffers Jets at the Michigan Tech University Student Ice Arena. The Eskymos got all six goals from their seniors: Sawyer LaMarch, Brayden Martineau, and Trevor Streichert each scored two goals apiece. LaMarch scored the first two goals of the game to set the tone. This came after he scored his 50th career goal during Friday night's win over Sault Ste. Marie. LaMarch tallied just 40 seconds into the contest, with Martineau and Ben Sands drawing assists. Midway through the period, LaMarch scored his second goal of the period, with Gunner Bourdeau and Sands drawing assists. And it was 3-0 a minute later when Streichert, scored, with assists from Brett Labre and Graham Johnson. In the second period, the Eskymos scored two quick goals to blow the game open, both of them by Martineau, with Nolan Bink assisting on both of the goals. And Streichert got his second goal of the game with 41 seconds left in the period, with Labre and Johnson assisting. Jeffers got a second period goal from Cade Osterman, and a third period goal from Elliot Asiala. Their goalie, Simon Rajala, made 29 saves on 35 shots. The Jets finished the regular season with a 12-12-1 record, and will face top-ranked Houghton in the regionals. Escanaba freshman goaltender Cully Hayes, who played every minute of the team's games this year (except for empty-net situations), made 27 saves on 29 shots. Escanaba (18-7-0) will host Kingsford Friday night in the regional semifinals. Game time is 7:00, and you can hear the game on FM-106.3 and www.radioresultsnetwork.com. CONFERENCE HOCKEY AWARDS ANNOUNCED---On Monday, the Great Lakes Hockey Conference awards were announced. Senior captain Sawyer LaMarch was named to the Second Team, as was senior assistant captain Gunner Bourdeau on defense. LaMarch’s cousin, senior Brayden Martineau, was given Honorable Mention. Houghton's Cam Markham was named the league's Player of the Year, Marquette goaltender Cole Kelly was the Rookie of the Year, and Houghton Coach Cor3y Markham was named the Coach of the Year. Hougton and Marquette shared the conference championship, and Escanaba finished third. |
