ESCANABA---
The Escanaba High School girls volleyball team picked up a non-conference win Tuesday night, beating the injury-plagued Bark River-Harris Broncos, 3-0.

The scores were 25-13, 25-16, and 25-20.

"They executed their hits very well tonight," Escanaba Coach Bev Ziebell said of her girls. "We had some great digs. Their blocking was a lot better. We're getting there now to where I really think we need to be. So, it's all coming together."

BR-H was playing without three of its starters, but Coach Brooke Anderson says they'll be back in the line-up soon, as the district tournaments are now three weeks away.

"We just talk about serving aggressive and doing everything aggressive with no points off," Anderson said. "I mean, credit to Mira Johnson (7-0 service run in second set). She's a sophomore, but she's a stud sophpmore. She got into a serving run there and that helped our momentum."

Anderson says that Escanaba's size at the net was a problem for her girls. Escanaba's Grayson LaMarche and Susie Moberg took turns dominating with blocks and strong hits from the front row. LaMarche wound up with a dozen kills, five service aces, six digs, and four blocks.

"I mean, you relaly can't coach height," Anderson said. "I mean, credit to them. They're tall, athletic girls. They came out swinging. We played them on Saturday (at the Escanaba Invitational, a tough 25-22, 25-22 Esky win), and they came out a different team tonight. They came out hard. They came out swinging. So, credit to them."

Ziebell says her team was not groggy after a long day of volleyball on Saturday, when they beat Sault Ste. Marie in the tournament semifinals before falling to the Upper Peninsula's top-ranked team, the Forest Park Trojans, in the championship match.

"I think we came into the game with a lot of energy because of Saturday," Ziebell said. "They looked good to me. The girls really, to me, looked like rock stars tonight."

For the Eskymos, the match ended a grueling stretch that included multiple matches on Saturday in the tournament on their home court. They'll have only one more home match this regular season, on Oct. 17, against Sault Ste. Marie.

"Just practicing the things we've been working on," Ziebell said. "More plays, more digging, more blocking. The whole game."
