HOUGHTON---
The Gladstone High School football team got off to a strong start Friday night in Houghton against the Gremlins, but things quickly from there as Houghton enjoyed a 42-17 win over the Braves on Parent's Night at Alumni Field.

Brayden Goudge rushed for 214 yards and a touchdown, and he returned a kick-off 87 yards for a score as the Gremlins improved to 3-4 on the season. Gladstone fell to 1-6.

"Our confidence is shot," Braves Coach Craig Ness said. "Mine, the team's. When we make mistakes, it's always a big one. It's never the little ones. But I told them, we'll come back on Monday and work. It's not a (lack of) effort. It's execution. It's like one zone off, one gap off. But I still like the effort that we had."

Austin Pepin threw touchdown passes to Nehnemiah Blair and Even Woelffer in the first half, and Luke Ingrham made both extra point kicks, putting Gladstone ahead, 14-6. Trevor Erva's 14-yard touchdown run put the Gremlins on the board.

Gladstone had momentum after the second Pepin TD pass, but the game turned around quickly when Goudge took the ensuing kickoff to the house for an 86-yard touchdown. A two-point run tied the game at 14-all.

In the second quarter, the Gremlins took the lead on a 26-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jay Halonen to a (very) wide-open Tim Brown.

The Braves struck back when Pepin found Woelffer for a long pass that set the team up for a first-and-goal at the three yard line. The Braves couldn't do anything on the next three plays, and settled for an Ingrham 23-yard field goal, making it a 20-17 game.

Gladstone's defense, which has held its own this season, was shredded to the tune of 468 yards of total offense, 413 of those on the ground. Groudge broke off an electrifying 83-yard touchdown run to give the Gremlins a 26-17 lead late in the second quarter.

Gladstone once again drove deep into Houghton territory, but the drive ended with a Pepin interception, by Anders Rauitola with 1:54 left in the half. And Houghton drove down the field, scoring on a 25-yard touchdown from Halonen to Devyn Sorvisto.

That gave Houghton a 34-17 lead at halftime, and that was pretty much the game.

Halonen scored the only touchdown of the second half as he broke multiple tackles and went in from 23 yards out to make it a 42-17 final.

Unofficially, the Braves were led offensively by Woelffer, who was filling in for the injured Isaac Ketchum. He had 100 yards on 23 carries, with a rushing and receiving touchdown.

Pepin completed 12-of-30 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns.

For Houghton, Goudge had 214 yards rushing, and he did it on only eight carries. Halonen added 69 yards on 13 carries, and he completed both of his passes for touchdowns, totaling 55 yards. Erva contributed 90 rushing yards on 17 carries.

Gladstone (1-6) will host the Calumet Copper Kings (4-3) next Friday night at 7:00. The Gremlins (3-4) will take on Negaunee at Miners Stadium (5-2) next Friday night.
