GAYLORD---The Marquette Sentinels boys soccer team traveled to Gaylord Tuesday night for the regional round of the MHSAA playoffs against the top-ranked and undefeates Fruitport Trojans. Marquette scored first, but lost in the end, 4-2, ending their season with a successful record of 17-4-2. “Even though we didn't get the win, I am very proud of how our team played. We went toe to toe with a very good team," MSHS Coach Dan Salmon said. "We had a couple mistakes we couldn’t overcome and that is a hard thing to do in playoff soccer.”
Marquette started the scoring 18 minutes into the game when Kaleb Chipelewski found the net off a Dixon Poggi pass. Marqu ette nearly went up by two when Seth Sandstrom missed wide on an open shot.
The Trojans (20-0-1) then rattled off three goals in the next 16 minutes by Isaac VanderMolen, Nathaniel Cribley Cotto and Jyles Smithfor a 3-1 halftime lead.
In the second half, Chipelewski found the net again to cut the lead to 3-2 just 10 minutes into the half. Cody Struck got the assist.
However, Fruitport then scored on a Sam Krueger goal at the 20 minute mark to seal the win. Marquette keeper Edan Hautamaki faced 12 shots in net.
