MARQUETTE, Mich. - As is the case from time-to-time in the game of basketball, the Northern Michigan men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting team on Thursday night, falling to the Michigan Tech Huskies 88-65 for its first GLIAC loss of the year.
Northern was on the wrong end of a historic-shooting first half from the Huskies. NMU trailed 51-25 at halftime after MTU shot 20-28 (71.4%) from the field and 9-15 (60.0%) from three. On the contrary, the Wildcat offense struggled to find rhythm early on, shooting 9-27 (33.3%) overall and 1-10 (10.0%) from beyond the arc.
MTU's guard duo of Marcus Tomashek and Ty Fernholz led the way for the Huskies, combining for 37 points in the first half on 15-18 (83.3%) shooting and a 7-9 (77.7%) clip from three. Overall, Tomashek led all scorers with 31 points on 11-17 (64.7%) while Fernholz finished with 22 points on 8-12 (66.7%) shooting.
Dylan Kuehl had another productive day for the Green and Gold, scoring 20 points on 8-12 (66.7%) shooting to go along with six rebounds. NMU's leading scorer is now averaging 16.1 points per game and has scored in double figures in 12 of 13 games and has shot over 50% in 10 of the last 11.
Jackson Dudek added a season-high 14 points off the bench while Derek Merwick contributed nine points, three rebounds, and two assists.
The Wildcats outscored the Huskies in the second half and cut the deficit down to 15 late, but the first-half from Michigan Tech was too much to overcome.
Overall, NMU shot a season-low 21-59 (35.6%) from the floor and 6-23 (26.1%) from three while the Huskies were 32-54 (59.3%) and 13-24 (54.2%) from downtown.
The defeat drops NMU to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the GLIAC, while Tech improved to 9-4 and 4-1 in conference play.
