Gladstone 9-10 Girls Advance To State Semifinals

WYOMING, Mich.---Two Delta County Little League teams have now won state championships, and the Gladstone Minor Girls (age 9-10) would like to make it three.

The Delta County Junior Boys won their state title on Monday, joining the Escanaba Junior Girls as champions.

And the Gladstone girls are now two steps away from doing the same.

Gladstone jumped out to a quick lead and then hung on to eliminate Rogers City, 8-5, in the state quarterfinals Monday night at Pinery Park. The girls will now face the local district champion, Grandville, in the state semifinals Tuesday afternoon.

Brittany Schwartz pitched for Gladstone, striking out 11 batters. She walked five and hit a batter.

At the plate, Schwartz had a triple and two runs batted in. Taylor Trudeau was good at the plate again, going 3-for-3 with a twiple and two runs batted in.

Morgan Letteriello had a single and a run batted in, and Taylor Ziese also had a base hit.

Ziese also made a nice defensive play at first base that prevented Rogers City from scoring two more runs as the District Eight champions made a late charge.

The game was tied at 1-1 after two innings when Gladstone scored three runs in the top of the third and three more in the top of the fifth.

That gave the Purple a 7-1 lead, but Rogers City scored four in the bottom of the inning before Ziese made her defensive play.

Gladstone scored again in the top of the sixth inning to go ahead 8-5, then Schwartz struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to preserve the quarterfinal win.

Gladstone faces Grandville in the second semifinal Tuesday at Pinery Park.

The game starts at 4:00 and it will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600) and rrnsports.com.
