PARCHMENT, Mich.---The Gladstone 10-11 boys baseball team lost its final pool play game on Monday, but it didn't stop the boys from advancing to the state's final four. Gladstone lost to Grosse Pointe Park, 12-3, in Parchment. But Gladstone still qualified for the semifinals because the boys won two tough games over the weekend.
Gladstone defeated Byron Township, 3-1, on Saturday, and then the boys beat Dowagiac, also 3-1, on Sunday. In the first game on Saturday, Gladstone had four base hits in the first inning and scored all three of their runs against Byron Township.
Justin Malmstead and Peyton Fedell had RBI's in that first inning. After that, the game was all about defense, and Malmstead was strong on the mound.
In the second game on Sunday, Gladstone had seven hits, while Dowagiac had just three. Fedell had two of Gladstone's hits. Cole Hansen, Malmstead, Drake Forrest, Riley Baldovski, and Cameron Kelly each had one base hit.
Hansen and Malmstead each had RBI's in the third inning to make the score 2-0 for the Purple and White. Fedell drove in the team's final run in the sixth inning.
Zach Hanson pitched four innings and only allowed one base hit!
