MARQUETTE----The Northern Michigan University volleyball team concluded its regular season home play on Tuesday at Vandament Arena.
The Wildcats swept Michigan Technological University, 3-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. NMU improves to 19-8 overall and 12-2 in the GLIAC. The Wildcats had comfortable leads in all three sets, with set scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-14.
In set one, NMU went up to a quick 12-4 lead on four consecutive points on two kills by senior Sarah Hamilton and one a piece by senior Lina Lopes and freshman Alex Larsen.
From there, NMU kept a six or more point lead for the remainder of the set.
Early on in set two, Northern kept the lead by a slim five points or less. But that changed when NMU scored four consecutive points on Lopes's serve, including three errors by the Huskies, to give the Wildcats a nine point lead (19-10). The set ended on back-to-back kills by Lopes and Hamilton.
In set three, NMU held a 14-11 lead over the Huskies before the Wildcats scored the next five points to go up 19-11 on sophomore Kaitlyn Hoffman's serve.
The streak included a kill by sophomore Alexis Nelson and two kills by senior Kalli Herron. On Northern's next serving series, with the 20-13 lead, the Wildcats scored another five straight points, this time on Kellisha Harley's serve.
A kill by Herron from Harley closed out the match. Herron closed out the game leading all players in kills with 10, while Hamilton added nine and Nelson had seven.
NMU finished with a total of 41 kills, with six players tallying five or more for a .268 attack percentage. Sophomore Alex Berger led the defense with 14 digs and Lopes added 11. Harley setup the offense with 29 assists.
For the Huskies, Shelby Jones had four kills and Jacqueline Arid added 11 digs.
The Wildcats continue GLIAC play this weekend on the road with two games below the bridge. NMU plays at Hillsdale on Friday at 7 p.m. and at Northwood on Saturday at 4 p.m.
