CANTON, N.Y.---The Finlandia University softball team beat Maine-Presque Isle, 5-2, Sunday morning to repeat as ACAA Champions.
In the first inning, sophomore Harlie Caster walked, moved to second a sacrifice bunt and third on a grounder.
Sophomore Emily Nguyen singled up the middle to score Caster.
Maine-Presque Isle (25-11) tied it up in the fourth.
In the fifth for FinnU, an error and two hits had the bases loaded with one out.
Nguyen crushed a triple to right center field to clear the bases. Nguyen would score on a grounder to make it 5-1.
The Owls scored a run and had a runner on second with one out in the seventh. The Lions got two ground balls to end the tournament.
For Finlandia (21-12), Nguyen had three hits and drove in four runs while sophomore Kassandra Avila had two hits. Avila (11-7) gave up eight hits, one run, walked one and struck out three in six innings.
For Maine-Presque Isle, Sara Packard (16-8) gave up eight hits, five runs, three earned, walked one and struck out eight in six innings.
Four players made the ACAA All-Tournament team; Kassandra Avila, Denia Bent, Makenna Gorham andEmily Nguyen. Avila, Gorham and Nguyen were second time selections.
Avila had seven hits, a double, drove in six runs and hit .875. In the circle, she was 1-0 with four strikeouts and a 6.22 ERA in nine innings.
Bent had six hits, two doubles, scored six runs, drove in four runs and hit .600. In the circle, she was 2-0 with 11 strikeouts to just one walk for a 1.75 ERA in 12 innings.
Gorham had a triple, scored three runs, drove in two runs and hit .429.
Nguyen had seven hits, three doubles and a triple, scored five runs, drove in eight, a slugging percentage of 1.091% and hit .636.
