FUN IN THE SUN: Wildcats Volleyball Team Wins Opener In Florida

The new-look Northern Michigan volleyball team opened up the 2025 season in grand fashion, defeating (RV) Wheeling University in four sets at the SpringHill Suites Invitational in the Sunshine State. The Wildcats dropped the opening set 17-25, but once the group got into rhythm and found its identity, the Green and Gold looked like they were in midseason form, winning the following three sets 25-21, 26-24, and 25-16.

MINNESOTA SWEEP: Bay College Volleyball Wins Three Road Matches

The Bay College Norse Volleyball Team (4-3) lost just one set in three matches this weekend, coming out of a Minnesota trip with three wins and riding the high of a four-match win streak. On Friday they swept Anoka-Ramsey Community College (1-5) in three straight sets, before doing the same to their hosts for the evening Century College (0-5). On Saturday they travelled to Inver Grove Heights and defeated Dakota County Technical College (2-3) three sets to one.

Bay College Opens Volleyball Season At Tourney In Rockford

The Bay College Norse volleyball team opened its season with four matches over the weekend at a tournament in Rockford, Illinois. The Norse won one match and lost the other three.

One of the wins was against Fruitport, the team that eliminated Marquette in the regionals in each of the past two years.

'CATS COME UP SHORT: Losing Streak Continues For NMU Football

The Northern Michigan University football team could not break its losing streak on Saturday, losing to Northwood University, 23-18, in Midland. NMU has not son a game since late in the 2022 season. NMU has lost 24 straight football games, going back to the 2023 season.

The Negaunee High School football team used its strength in the trenches to overwhelm the Gladstone Braves, 25-2, in a high school football game Friday night at the Marble Athletic Field. It was a hard-hitting game all night by both teams, a typical Gladstone-Negaunee physical battle like so many others in this rivalry.

TWO UP, TWO DOWN: Michigan Tech Rolls To Win In South Dakota

September 04, 2025

The Michigan Tech football team once again used a full team effort to bask in victory with a 45-9 decision on the road over South Dakota Mine at O'Harra Stadium on a windy Thursday evening. Despite the long trek to the Mount Rushmore State, the Huskies were primed and ready from the jump, with the defense forcing a fumble on the first drive with defensive tackle Pierce Miller forcing a fumble on the Hardrockers second play of the day. The Black & Gold followed that up with a blocked punt by Desmond Mullen, tracked down by Kolby Hindenach for Michigan Tech's first touchdown, setting the tone for the night defensively.

OVERTIME THRILLER: Braves Fall To Durand In Lower Michigan, 28-22

The Gladstone Braves and Durand Railroaders battled in a back-and-forth football game Friday night in Lower Michigan, and the normal four quarters weren’t enough to settle the outcome. The Railroaders won the game in overtime, 28-22, after the Braves turned the ball over on their final possession in regulation time, and on their only possession in overtime.

Eskymos Rally For Season-Opening Win Over Kingsford, 21-18

August 28, 2025

The Escanaba High School football team rallied from eleven points down in the final quarter to beat the Kingsford Flivvers, 21-18, Thursday night, at the Escanaba Athletic Field. Brody Ison’s “jump-pass” to Alex Stolboerger for a touchdown put the Eskymos in the lead with three minutes left, and Keagan Braun's interception with 27 seconds left sealed the win.

High School Runners Compete In Bay College X-C Meet

The Bay College Norse athletic department hosted a high school cross country meet on Saturday for the first time ever, using the Farmhouse course in Flat Rock, the same venue that hosted the MHSAA high school U.P. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT: West Virginia Cruises To Island Resort Championship

September 01, 2025

The West Virginia University Mountaineers men's golf team finished what it started on Monday, cruising to a resounding victory at the Island Resort Collegiate at Sage Run. The Mountaineers followed up Sunday's 40-under par performance with another stellar performance on Monday, shooting 15-under par to finish the tournament with a sizzling 55-under par 809 to win the 54-hole event.

MOUNTAINEERS ON TOP: Leach, West Virginia In Control At Sage Run

The first day of the Island Resort Collegiate in Harris saw the West Virginia University Mountaineers dominate play for most of the 36 holes at the Sage Run Golf Course. WVU shot 18 under par in the first round, and then followed that up with a school-record 22 under par, finishing with a 40-under par 536. NMU Cross Country Finishes Second At UWGB Meet

9/6/25

It was quite the start to the season for the Northern Michigan cross country team, as they finished in second place at the Phoenix Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats totaled 54 team points, being edged by the the 47 from St. Thomas in first place. The Green and Gold were well-represented in the top-10 with two finishers. Senior Madi Szymanski led the way with a time of 22:14.8 for 5th place. Not far behind in her first collegiate race was freshman Ashley Choponis, taking 7th with an impressive debut time of 22:31.8.

Lake State Hires New Assistant Athletic Director

Lake Superior State University has hired Roschard Watkins as Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Academic Services, Leadership & Life Skills Development. Watkins arrives on campus with a strong student-athlete academic support background at multiple NCAA Division I institutions. A new position at Lake Superior State, the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Academic Services, Leadership & Life Skills Development holds a key role in guiding student-athletes through their academic journey, while advising them on evolving NCAA regulations.

NMU Hires Mueller As Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

The Northern Michigan women's basketball team has announced the hiring of alumna Emily Mueller as an assistant coach with the 2025-26 season on the horizon.

For the past two years, Mueller has served as a graduate assistant coach at William Woods University (Fulton, Mo.) while pursuing her Master's degree in Athletic Administration. At William Woods, she assisted with planning, coaching, and instruction of practices, games, and individual player development. She also contributed to game strategy, preparation, and execution, including scouting opponents and analyzing game footage.

Mueller earned her Bachelor's degree in Secondary Health and Physical Education from Northern in December of 2022. Throughout 2022, she served as an intern on the women's basketball coaching staff, along with leading the Marquette Senior High School freshmen team.

NMU Men's Basketball Team Adds Division One Transfer

The Northern Michigan Men's Basketball team has announced the addition of Bennett Basich out of the transfer portal. Basich joins the Northern Michigan program after a a season at UW-Green Bay, a Division I program out of the Horizon League. Basich redshirted his lone season with the Phoenix, but had a standout career at Arrowhead High School in Wisconsin. He was a member of the two-time state runner up team, was First Team All-State, and was a Two-Time First Team All Conference (Classic 8) honoree
