The Escanaba Minor Little League All-Stars (age 8-10) took the District Ten championship Thursday night with a 2-1 win over Gladstone. There were just three base hits combined between the two teams in a pitcher's duel between Escanaba's Mya Humbert and Gladstone's Maia Hughes.
Humbert struck out 16 batters and Hughes fanned 12, making for 28 of the game's 36 outs coming on strikeouts. The go-ahead run for Escanaba in the fifth inning scored when the throw back to Hughes got away and Isla McCarthy scored.
Escanaba advances to the state tournament next weekend in Cheboygan. The first scheduled game time is Friday, July 18, at noon.
