ALPENA---The Bay College Norse women's basketball team kept pace in the MCCAA North Conference standings Wednesday night with a 98-45 win over the Alpena Community College Lumberjacks in Alpena.

The result improved the record for the 24th-ranked Norse to 20-4 overall and 9-1 in conference play, one game behind first place Mid Michigan, which also won its game Wednesday night over Delta College. The Norse and Lakers will meet in the final game of the regular season on Feb. 24 in Mt. Pleasant.
The Norse led from start to finish, jumping to a 20-2 lead in the first quarter against the Lumberjacks (4-16 overall, 0-10 MCCAA). Bay was able to try different line-up configurations and work on multiple defensive sets as the Norse prepare for the upcoming battle with Mid Michigan, and the post-season games from there.
Sophomore Lauren Zawada led the Norse in scoring with 23 points. Fellow sophomore Makenna Hendrickson added 17 points and McKenzie Hoffmeyer chipped in 15 points.
Freshman Madison Gamble, a Mackinac Island High School graduate who has had limited playing time this season and was in her first game back from a month-long concussion, added a career high nine points. Her bank shot at the first half buzzer gave Bay College a 52-22 lead heading into the locker room.
Lillie Maser led Alpena with eleven points, and Pickford graduate Brooke Portice added ten points for the Lumberjacks in their final home game and Sophomore Night.
The Norse return home for two games this week as they continue their playoff push. Bay will host Muskegon Community College on Saturday at 1 p.m., and will host Kirtland Community College next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on Maverick 106.3 FM and on-line at www.baynorse.com.
