Six Gladstone Youth Wrestlers Place At State Finals
BATTLE CREEK---Gladstone Youth Wrestlers had a successful weekend at the Michigan Youth Wrestling Association's state finals in downstate Battle Creek.

The weekend started with seventh grader Adam Bruce winning five of six matches this weekend to take third place in a 30-man bracket. Bruce, a 114-pounder, won his third place match over Jackson Nevandowski of Corunna, 3-1, on Saturday.

Bruce had entered the weekend with a 43-1 record, and he won his first three matches on Friday (one on a bye). Then on Saturday, Bruce lost to Zac Bellaire of Dundee, 5-2, in the semifinals. Bellaire went on to win the state championship.

Bruce came back to win a consolation match over Wyatt Cool in sudden-victory overtime, 6-4. That put him in the third place match, where he picked up the win, qualifying for the national tournament.

Bruce wrestled those three matches in under three hours on Saturday.

On Sunday, Gladstone's 55-pounder, Trevor Thorbahn, won a state championship. He defeated Dayne Zeeman of Corunna in the semifinals, 5-4. Then in the title match, Thorbahn (a kindergartner) beat Trevor White of Lakeview, 9-4.

Also on Sunday, second-grader Austin Solis also finished third in the state. He also weighs 55 pounds. Solis had won his first three matches, but in the semifinals, lost a tough 2-1 decision to Danny Roti of the All American Grappling Academy.

Solis bounced back to win a consolation match, and then in Sunday's third place match, he beat Jack Mills of Huron, 7-2.

Gladstone fourth grader Hunter Poiter also finished in third place in the 130-pound bracket. He lost in Saturday's quarterfinals, but won two consolation matches to make it to Sunday's action. First, Poiter pinned Zachary Painter of Williamston in 51 seconds, and then in the third place match, he pinned Lincoln Pitchard in 49 seconds.

Two other Gladstone kids placed in their weight classes. Bryce Carlson was fourth in the 43-pound weight class, losing his third place match in overtime. And Michael Brazeau finished in eighth polace in the 59-pound weight class.

Gladstone's Cole Hansen, Cole Poiter, and Terrien Nygard-Frankovich also competed in the state tournament this weekend. Hansen won three matches and lost two. Cole Potier wrestled six times and went 4-2. And Nygard-Frankovich won three and lost two.

Escanaba's Justin Mathieson wrestled under "Far North Affiliated" and after pinning his first opponent on Friday, he lost his next two matches.

Bark River-Harris entered five wrestlers in the state finals, and all have lost two matches. Drew Allgeyer and Tyler Raciot each won two matches to go along with their two losses. Kaden Mustafa went 1-2. Mason Kivi and Keaton Bartozek also competed.

Munising also had five boys compete in the state finals, and all five have had their two losses: Christian Cole, Joe Lagrou, Tyler Marino, Nick Miles, and Desmond Mullen. Marino and Miles both managed to get two wins during their competiton at the MYWA state finals, while Lagrou got one win in his three matches.
