Upper Peninsula Youth Football Taking Registration

ESCANABA---The Upper Peninsula Youth Football League in Delta County is preparing for the upcoming season. Registration Day is this week in Escanaba.

Sign-ups are scheduled for this Tuesday and Wednesday at the Holy Name Catholic School Gym in Escanaba, from 5:30 until 8:00 both days.

The registration cost for players is $75, plus each kid has to buy $125 worth of raffle tickets up front, and then they keep the money when they sell the tickets.

Scholarships and payment plans are available.

The league, which in the past was associated with the Pop Warner program, teaches kids the fundamentals of football. It is for kids between ages five through sixth grade.

The season runs from the first week of August through the end of October. Sports physicals are required as part of the program, and kids are covered by insurance for injuries. There is also a program for girls to learn to become cheerleaders.

The registration fee for cheerleaders is $30, plus each kid has to buy $75 worth of raffle tickets. When kids sell those raffle tickets, they get to keep that cash.

The UPYF was established in 2000, and it is a non-profit organization that is a sub-chapter of American Youth Football. Its coaches are trained in "positive coaching" by the Positive Coaching Alliance, or PCA.
