Northern Falls To Tech In Women's Soccer, 2-1

HOUGHTON---The Northern Michigan University soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Michigan Tech in the squad's GLIAC opener Sunday.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 1-3-1 overall this season while the Huskies improved to 3-1.

Michigan tech scored two goals in the first half when Jacqueline Mielke converted scoring chances in the 16th(15:45) and 26th minute (25:03).

Sophomore Paula Hafner scored an unassisted goal on a free kick in the 85th minute (84:52) to cut the MTU lead to 2-1.

Sophomore forward Carmen Villarruel had two great scoring chances and beat Michigan Tech goalkeeper Jenna Phelps to the net, but both goals were waived off the line during the second half.

Wildcats goalkeeper Caroline Glantz made five saves in goal playing the complete 90-minutes of action for NMU. Glantz now stands at 1-2-1 on the season. 

Michigan Tech outshot NMU 11-8 while Hafner and senior Ashley Katers led the Wildcats with three shots each. Mielke led the Huskies with five shots, four of which were on goal.

NMU continues action on the road traveling to Ashland for a 7 p.m. matchup on Friday.
