Rockets Preparing For Tough Battle With Cedarville

RAPID RIVER---They've had wars before, and they're about to have another one.

The Rapid River Rockets and Cedarville Trojans have played in high-stakes football games in the past. The biggest came in November of 2012, when the Rockets went to DeTour and upset the Trojans, 22-14, to win a regional championship.

Rockets senior Dave Hough comments
That win came after the Trojans beat the Rockets on Homecoming by 60 points during the regular season.

This time, the Trojans are coming in as the lower playoff seed, after losing to Rapid River, 20-19, in a regular season game last month.

But when you talk to the Rockets players and coaches, they feel that they are the underdogs for this Friday night's playoff game.

Rapid River (10-0) will host Cedarville (9-1) in the regional championship game.

"I expect their best ball game," Rapid River Coach Steve Ostrenga said of the Trojans. "They're senior-heavy. They're fast. They're big. They're going to bring everything they have. It will be their best ball game. And they're fired up."

The Rockets were not expected to be in this position, having lost star quarterback Jake Pearson, center Hayden Hardwick, and lineman Mike Boyer (amongst others) to graduation. But they have  managed to run the table so far this season.

"The key for us is just staying together as a team," Rockets senior Dave Hough said. "We needed to step it up. Everyone needed to be leaders, and that's what we did as a team."

Rockets senior Josh Parrett comments
"It made us want to work that much harder, because no one thought we'd amount to anything this year, just be average," Rockets senior Josh Parrett added.

The Rockets players know that Cedarville will be tough to beat.

"They are a very good team," Parrett said, "very fast, very quick. Well-coached team. We're gonna have to have our best ball game."

Friday's game starts at 7:00, with the pre-game show at 6:45.

It will be broadcast live on WGKL-FM (105.5), WCHT-AM (600), and www.rrnsports.com. The broadcast will also be simulcast on FM-105.5 in Cedarville.
