Benefit Event To Help Escanaba Athletic Director

An event will be held this Saturday night in Escanaba to help Escanaba High School Athletic Director Nick Nolde and his family.

Nolde has been battling brain cancer, and has received long periods of treatment at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.

This will not be the usual benefit, however. This one is a "RockStock" at the Escanaba Elks Club. There will be live rock 'n' roll music played by The Jam Band. There will be picnic food and keg beer as part of your cover charge. Also, lots of prizes and raffles.

The money that is raised will help Nolde and his family cover the hotel, gas, food, and other charges associated with traveling to Ann Arbor for treatment.

Nolde, 34, is an Escanaba High School graduate who became a professional baseball umpire several years after graduating. He umpired Minor League Baseball games for a few years before returning home to raise his family in the Upper Peninsula.

Nolde was the athletic director at Bark River-Harris High School before accepting the Escanaba job when Dave Wilson resigned this past summer. It was a short time later that Nolde was diagnosed with cancer, and underwent surgey at the U of M in August.

Along with the cover charge to help Nolde, organizers are asking that you bring nonperishable food items. That food will help local food banks, which have nearly emptied their shelves to provide Christmas meals for Delta County's less-fortunate.

So, it's the "Rock" benefit for Nolde, and "Stock" for the food pantries.

This event runs from 6:00 until midnight Saturday at the Escanaba Elks.
